Mulberry Commons

Mulberry Commons is an urban development project to be completed in (3) phases.

Phase I ($10 million) includes the construction of a new municipal park, Mulberry Commons, to be located between Mulberry Street and the eastern side of McCarter Highway.  This includes the area from Prudential Center through to Penn Station.  This phase includes site grading, utilities, infrastructure, hardscape and landscape.  This phase also includes coordination of Phase I activities with the activities of the developers for the sites adjacent to the park, including the development of private improvements and the construction of a municipal roadway (Columbia Student Extension) which will go through the park from north to south.

Phase IIA includes the area to the east of the Northeast Corridor viaduct within the Ironbound section of Newark, including the redevelopment of Peter Francisco and Mother Cabrini parks and the development of a pedestrian connection between the Mulberry Commons and the pedestrian bridge as part of Phase IIB.

Phase IIB includes a pedestrian bridge from Mulberry Commons over McCarter Highway to the platforms within Newark Penn Station serving Tracks 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 with the bridge continuing to the east of Newark Penn Station to grade level within the Ironbound, called the Station Plaza RDA.

This project is in the final design phase for Phase I. Construction is scheduled to start in November 2017 with completion in October 2018. Cambridge is providing full construction management services including preconstruction, construction, and closeout.
